We’re all aware that elite members of the school football team or the “top of the class” might be eligible for a scholarship, but did you know that there are other scholarships available for the more, shall we say, unusual attributes? You really don’t need to be an elite athlete or straight A student to be able to find some help in funding your university or college education.
Let’s take a look at some of the more wacky scholarships which are available, as many companies, charities and organizations realize that donating a scholarship can be a brilliant way to raise their profile, especially among the student population. Some of these wacky scholarships are awarded based on such things as hair color, weight, height, artistic people, musical people, people who suffer from asthma, vegetarians – the list is remarkably long (and a bit weird).
The crying shame is that a large number of theseweird scholarships actually go unclaimed, simply because students don’t realize that they even exist. It really is worth the time and effort to try to track down all eventualities, however unlikely they may appear, to help to fund your further education.
The last century or so has seen matters of gender equality become increasingly important and education has been foremost in these matters. There are now a great range of specific Scholarships for Women designed to help maintain their equality (or should that be superiority?Even in historically male dominated professions such as science, engineering and math, there are now a surprising amount of women who have achieved prominent positions in their careers, thanks to a large extent to these scholarships.
There is a large and important African American community in America, but sadly these numbers are still not reflected in the number of African American students who go on to achieve a university education, often due to lack of funds. Thankfully there are now an increasing number of African American Scholarships which are available and making a university education a real option for the future.
A shortfall in the number of qualified teachers in America is a real cause for concern, but an increasing amount of Teaching Scholarships are now available which is helping to solve the problem. With Teaching Scholarships being offered at local and national level it is hoping that more of the top talent in the country will be able to train for this worthwhile career.
