It depends on your income. The typical answer is "yes" if you are the typical college student that makes little to no money. If you can file as independent and don't make a ton of money, that works in your favor since no one is claiming you on their taxes. If they were, then their income would affect your financial aid award package.

But I say it's a good thing.
