Diving into the Film Industry

If you have decided that you are going to take the plunge and enter the chaotic, fun, rewarding world of filmmaking, it is important to get rid of as much obstacle to your goal as possible. The most common form of resistance is debt. The first time you join the film industry you may have to work for no cost. That is why if you have financial obligations, you are already doomed from the beginning. It took me 3 years to land a job, three years after I made the final decision of starting a career in the film industry. It is not easy to work on a boring job just to eliminate my debts, but I need to take care of this problem first before I can follow my dream. If the reason why you are pursuing in a career in the film industry is because you love making films rather than to earn money, then you now have a leverage over your competitors. Believe it or not, people in the film industry turn out to be slaves to their jobs just like everyone else.

They find themselves in a position where they are forced to take jobs in order to pay their bills. On the other hand, those who are free to make their choices when it comes to projects have the chance to not only get work but also to accept job offers that will help further their careers. Spend time building this freedom before you get locked into the life of a starving artist. Pay off your debt and create some sort of passive earnings.

If you are a resourceful person this tip will not seem sexy, but it will free you to be able to follow your passion the way most people dream of their whole lives. I love the film industry because it acts like a miniature, super-charged economy. Because film professionals are self-sufficient contractors and film projects only last three months to a year at a time, this industry is in a constant state of flux. A movie is an opportunity to generate money and this can pass by at the blink of an eye.

Success in the film industry can take place almost overnight compared to the total economy. However, it is not sufficient to have creativity only. Business skill must come together. This means that you have to acquire some business skills to put your ideas to work. Entrepreneurs have learned to master the creative/logical duality in their own minds. Creative people are amazing idea makers, but tend to be deficient in logical skills like decisiveness, persistence, and follow-through.
