Comparing Teachers And Mentors

When comparing mentors and teachers, the greatest question is about who can give you the right amount of help that you really need. Experiencing both the collegiate and apprenticeship worlds personally, I can tell you that mentors are the much more helpful ones, hands down. I leaned more in two years under a mentor than I did for 5 trying to figure out what I wanted to do in college. The choice, for me, is an effortless one.

Here is a thing about teachers, they do know a lot of things but they by no means encountered these things first hand. Because of this, their knowledge is all based on many years passed when things were likely much different than they are currently. Therefore, to keep them updated teachers read books which do contain a lot of information but may still be missing some.

I even had a personalized experience with teachers who do not teach but rather they only keep on giving you homework, present powerpoint presentations, and of course compute the grades. To them, I can literally say I got no source of success or genuinely any knowledge at all. It was those kinds of teachers that got me thinking about a career in music ‚Äì something out of the norm and free from classroom life. I desired to learn from someone with first hand experience and indeed my wish came true.

It didn’t require long for me to take a side in the battle among mentors and teachers. It did not take long for me to notice the light after I got to experience the hands on training my mentor provided. I was able to work with actual equipment and see how things would go in my career. The need for me to focus on pictures in textbooks or deal with awkward situations is history. What was happening in front of me was what has now happened in my actual profession.

My mentor helped me get contacts too. I met my boss and most of the individuals I am associated with through my mentor and these associates assisted me in getting some references for my work applications. I didn’t have to do anything at all but be myself and allow my mentor’s connections to lead the way.

I am glad I made the right decision with mentors versus teachers. I’m no longer looking for a career or a difference in my life. Change is here and it feels totally amazing. I can only wish that others out there cease wasting time in the classroom and begin living their dream in a mentorship program.
